What a $30,000 carpet taught me about perfectionism

Greetings!

Eighteen years ago this week, I married my best friend.

Don and I don't do anything extravagant for our anniversary, that's not really been us. Just a nice quiet dinner together. Every year though I do find myself wanting to mark it in some way at home. This year, that meant giving our master bedroom a proper sparkle. I cleared the surfaces, freshened the linens, and set out a pair of small red candles on the dresser.

That room happens to sit in the love and relationship area of the Bagua in our home, which makes it even more special.

It feels so nourishing to care for a space where you actually rest and reconnect, not just decorate it and move on. There's definitely a happy balance between intention and perfection, and I've learned over the years that they are definitely not the same thing.

I learned that lesson the hard way during my private aircraft design days, when my perfectionism got the better of me over a $30,000 custom carpet. An eighth of an inch was enough to send it back to be remade twice. It was a big lesson in letting go of the need to get everything exactly right, and one I still carry with me today.

Which, funny enough, leads right into this week's episode.

I'm covering five feng shui rules for the master bedroom. These are the ones I'm willing to bend for real life, and the one I hold firm on no matter what. If you've ever wondered whether your bedroom layout is "wrong," this one's for you.

This week, try this: See if there is an area of your home where perfection is showing up. Maybe it's the wall art that looks great but isn't really you. Maybe it's the photoshoot-ready styled bookcase where you can't really read the titles of your favorite books. Notice where you might be pushing perfectionism instead of authenticity.

While the Aligned Sanctuary retreat is sold out, applications are still open for the waitlist (in case of an emergency cancellation), as well as to be first on the list for the Spring retreat. Here is the application link.

Enjoy the rest of your week, and thank you for being here.

Warmly, Lisa Morton

Hello! I have some fun news to share before we get into this week's episode: Aligned at Home is now on the shelves of a few wonderful independent bookstores! I'll be sharing more about who they are and how you can visit (or order) very soon, so keep an eye on my social media over the next week or two for all the details. It feels especially fitting to share that news this week, because this episode is a big one. We're closing out year three of Feng Shui Living podcast and stepping into year...

Hello! Full disclosure, my husband and I went on our first bike ride of the summer... at the very end of August! We got rained on, of course, but we still had a great time. No clever tie-in today, I just had to share. In this week's episode… it's a fire horse year check-in. I'm sharing how this year has actually played out for me and for several clients, plus a few journal prompts and grounding tips to help you close out this fiery season with intention as we move into fall. Journal prompts...

Hello! I love it when a conversation on the podcast validates something I already believe in my bones. This week's guest, Ashley Murphy, co-founder of NEAT Method, did exactly that. Ashley started as an in-home personal trainer, and one day she noticed something...her client's disorganized kitchen wasn't just an eyesore. It was quietly working against everything they were trying to accomplish together. That observation grew into a company that's now in over 100 markets. We got into why the...
