Winter’s Wisdom: Flowing with the Water Element

Greetings!

My goodness, it has been cold where I live in Indiana. I was grateful for the chance to slip away to Florida for a few days- soaking up sunshine and the vibrant colors of blooming flowers. It felt funny to see magenta and fuchsia petals flourishing beneath winter greenery, and big red bows, draped over neighborhood entrances.

And yet, as tempting as it is to entirely escape the cold and gray of the northern hemisphere, there is a quiet medicine in this season. Winter carries its own wisdom. In Feng Shui, winter corresponds with the element of Water- inviting us to slow down, conserve our energy, and turn inward. This kind of reflection can be hard to access when life is buzzing and expansive, as it often is in the summer.

This week’s episode of Feng Shui Living explores the gentle lessons of winter and how we can work with this season rather than resist it. I hope you find it useful! Thank you so much for being here.

Warmly, Lisa Morton

Winter’s Wisdom: Flowing with the Water Element

Season 3 Episode 17

What if you had a permission slip to slow down during these busy months. Would you find more stillness and ease? In this episode I'll share about the season of winter, it's connection to the water element and I'll share a permission slip as well as tips to find a slower pace and feel comfortable while doing so.

Winter Solstice

A blurb from Maggie, Lisa's assistant

As daylight reaches its annual low point on December 21st, our bodies receive a clear signal to soften the pace. Light itself regulates our hormones, sleep, and energy, whether we consciously notice it or not. Winter reminds us that restoration isn’t optional- it’s built into the design.

Nothing in nature performs year-round, and we are no exception. The winter solstice invites us to honor the darker half of the cycle (rest, stillness, and inward focus) as essential counterparts to growth and action.

There is wisdom here, if we’re willing to listen. Allow yourself to be bored, to take a break from consumption. What wisdom does your heart have for you? If you consistently choose noise, action, & stimulation, you might never find out!

Hello! I’m writing to you from the warmth of my cozy kitchen on this gray December day. The sky is a fierce winter blue, while everything else is washed in that soft, quiet dormancy that only this season brings. Cub is at my feet, breathing slow and steady after a romp around the yard with his big red ball. The house is still… the perfect backdrop for writing to you. Winter is such a powerful time to recalibrate the inside of your home. With the natural world entering a period of rest, due to...

Hello! What have you been reading lately? As we approach the shortest day of the year, this is one of my favorite times to turn inward, turn off the TV, and pick up a book. Reading isn’t just a hobby... it’s nourishment. Studies show that reading reduces stress by 68%, slows mental decline, supports better sleep, and even helps reduce feelings of loneliness. I definitely read more than the average American (twelve books per year!), especially if we’re counting audiobooks, and lately I’ve been...

Happy Turkey Day! On a day devoted to gratitude, I’ve been reflecting on how gracefully our environments support (or sabotage) our ability to feel thankful. Gratitude flows so much more naturally when our minds feel clear, our bodies feel rested, and our spaces help us exhale. When we’re well-supported by our spaces the essence of the season becomes something we can genuinely experience, not just talk about. That’s why today’s episode feels like perfect timing! I’m answering your questions-...
